Pacific Hydro Announces Hydrogen Feasibility Study in WA

9 January 2020

Pacific Hydro has long been a pioneer within Australia’s renewable energy industry, and is thrilled to continue this legacy by announcing its entry into hydrogen. Yesterday, Western Australia’s Minister for Regional Development, the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC, announced that Pacific Hydro was one of seven successful applicants to the McGowan Government’s Renewable Hydrogen Fund.

Pacific Hydro owns and operates the Ord Hydro Power Station, a 30MW hydroelectric power plant located in the Kimberley region in Western Australia. The feasibility study will assess the potential of a co-located hydrogen plant, utilising electricity generated by the Ord Hydro plant, which would have the potential to supply hydrogen locally, as well as for export.

The location provides a unique opportunity for hydrogen production, utilising low cost, high availability, dispatchable renewable generation and access to water.

Involving key stakeholders and communities in development activities from the very beginning is as important to Pacific Hydro’s success as technical and financial factors. As the feasibility study commences, Pacific Hydro will engage with the Shire of Wyndham and East Kimberley (SWEK) and other community stakeholders regarding potentially suitable locations for any proposed infrastructure.

“While it’s still early days, the feasibility study will allow us to explore the practical, technical and economic aspects of the project”, explained Lily Habib, Pacific Hydro Australia’s Director of Projects. “Now more than ever, Australia needs to transition to a low carbon economy, and develop innovative responses to the challenges of energy affordability and efficiency, and we’re excited to be part of the solution.”
