With this in mind, Pacific Hydro's Sustainability Framework focuses on corporate sustainability strategy being integrated into responsible business practice throughout the organisation,
such thatmanagementpractices in four key areas of corporate responsibility (community, environment, workplace and business partners) drive positive performance in a range of commercial, environmental and social impact areas that are material to our business.

Safety First

Achieving the highest possible health and safety standards is a major priority for Pacific Hydro. As such, we are committed to ensuring that the health and safety of all directors, employees, contractors and visitors is placed above commercial and other priorities.

Our workplaces cover environments ranging from the corporate office to more remote development, construction and operating sites. Irrespective of the work environment or location, we aim to be the industry leader in occupational health and safety.

Pacific Hydro is committed to a systematic process of continuous improvement in the pursuit of 'best practice' health and safety performance. We set and track measurable health and safety performance indicators and we aim to vigilantly identify and eliminate or minimise exposure to hazards in the work place as far as is reasonably practicable.

With consultation and communication as the key to our health and safety management systems, safe practices are consistent across all our global operations. Educational, training and communication systems are continually refined and, vitally, all incidents and near-misses are fully investigated and action is taken to prevent recurrences.

Environmental Impact

Treading lightly on the earth

As part of our sustainable approach to powering a cleaner world, we ensure that the development, construction and operation of our projects leave only a positive footprint on the environment.

We aim to be an industry leader in environmental management and continually strive to improve our environmental performance.

Our Environmental Policy describes our environmental aims and the manner in which we seek to achieve these aims. Our Environmental Policy is implemented through our Environmental Management System. Globally, our Environmental Management System is based on ISO 14001 and all of our Australian operating sites are certified to ISO 14001. To read the policy in full, click here.

Watershed development

Our commitment to the environment extends to our watershed management programs, which enhance the local environments and protect the native flora and fauna around our hydro projects. The program at our Bakun Hydro Scheme in the Philippines has been particularly successful in protecting and maintaining existing forest cover, encouraging significant reforestation and rehabilitating slopes damaged from previous agricultural practices

Tree Nursery

As a part of its commitment with the community that lives nearby the projects in development, Pacific Hydro Chile inaugurated the first stage of its tree nursery, destined to reforest the 160 hectares aprox, involved in the construction of the run-of-river plant Chacayes.

In this place, that has the capacity to develop 400 thousand plants, the company will grow around eleven native species from Alto Cachapoal valley, such as cypress of the mountain, the maiten, the peumo and the hawthorn, among others.

This is a very relevant initiative for our company because it confirms our commitment in developing environment friendly sustainable energy, at the same time ensuring for the flora and fauna protection of the places we are located.

With the tree nursery kick off an important job possibility for the community nearby opens, because it is exclusively ran by people from the area.
