Community comment invited on Carmody’s Hill Wind Farm

Pacific Hydro's Planning Application for the Carmody's Hill Wind Farm will be on public display for three weeks from Wednesday November 26th to December 18th and community comment is invited.

Pacific Hydro communications manager Emily Wood said that the communities of Georgetown, Gulnare and Gladstone had played a key role in encouraging the Company to seek a planning permit. "The display period provides an opportunity for the community to put their views about the project in writing to the Northern Areas Council ", she said.

The site for the Carmody's Hill Wind Farm is located along a ridgeline approximately 7km east of Georgetown. The wind farm runs along the ridgeline south from the Bundaleer Forest to Mt Misery.

Pacific Hydro's Planning Application seeks approval for a maximum of 70 turbines with capacity of up to 175MW. At this size the wind farm would provide enough zero emission electricity to power the equivalent of 70,000 homes annually, abating up to 540,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas.

The name 'Carmody's Hill' was selected by the local communities surrounding the site and refers to a Hill along the ridgeline. The Hill was named after the Carmody Family who were the original settlers in the area.

In memoirs recently provided to Pacific Hydro it is revealed that wind power has a history in the area going back to early 1900s.

"We were very excited to speak with a descendent of the original Carmody settlers who generously shared with us their family history and expressed their happiness about the wind farm's name. As it turns out the family's farmhouse was originally powered by wind energy so we are very pleased to be honouring the family and their history in this way", added Ms Wood.

The Council will be commencing the Statutory Notification Period on December 3rd and representations should be made to the Council by December 18th 2008.

The application will be on display at the Northern Areas Council Office in Jamestown, the Gladstone Discovery Centre, the Gulnare Post Office, the Georgetown General Store and The Old Hotel at Yacka.

Community Relations Coordinator Holly Marsh and Environmental Planning Manager Jilly Adams will be available on Wednesday December 3 at Yacka from10am -12noon, Gulnare from 12:30 to -2:30pm, Georgetown from 3-5pm and then on Thursday December 4th at Gladstone from 10-12midday and Jamestown from 1-3pm to assist with any queries.
