Engineering Geologist - ChileOffice
Location: Cachapoal Valley - On site
Reports To: Construction Manager
1. PURPOSE
This role is responsible for the performance of the geology
aspects of the construction of Chacayes hydroelectric project,
including geological mapping, procedures, reports, rock
classification, rock and soil support assessment, cost estimation,
contract administration and any other related issues.
2. KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESULT AREAS
- Participate in all required activities related to the
geological interpretation of the ground conditions of the
underground excavations and surface works for the Chacayes
Hydroelectric Project.
- Be present to witness and verify the rock condition and rock
classification exercise done by the Contractor and ensure a correct
rock classification is made at all times.
- Keep an updated record and report to the Site Operations
Manager the differences between the Contract Excavation Class
Conditions and the actual Excavation Class Conditions encountered,
for any cost and time adjustment and/or for any other purpose under
the Contract.
- Perform the geologic mapping of the underground excavations in
a timely manner, before it is covered by the rock support and
maintain it up to date, according to standardized recording
practice.
- Participate in the rock support selection process with the
Contractor, and keep an accurate record of the applied support
according to standardized recording practice.
- Ensure the Contractor performs proper monitoring of the
underground excavations, as required in the Contract and witness
the convergence measurements and keep an updated and accurate
record of the measurements.
- Review and comment on the blasting pattern (charge diagram)
presented by the Contractor for the diverse surface and underground
excavations.
- Provide reports and geological evaluation and tunnel works
analysis as well as other project works in order to verify payments
and Contractor Contract Change Requests.
- Maintain the Projects geological drawings updated.
- Comply in every way with the EPC contractor's HSE policies,
plans and procedures as well as with those from the Chacayes
Hydroelectric power plant.
- Assure that the contractor carries out his work according to
the engineering designs that have been released for the tunnel
construction as well as for other project works in accordance to
the requirements of the Contract.
- Assure that the contractor carries out his work in a safe
manner in accordance to the project safety policies, the contract
requirements, and the contractor's Health and Safety Plan.
- Notify the Health and Safety or Site Operations Manager of any
incompliance with safety issues as soon as possible.
- Coordinate with the Contractor to resolve and inform of any
instability problem.
- Verify and witness testing or other activities related to the
execution and evaluation of basic geological studies according to
the specifications of the contract and other applicable activity
standards.
- Predict and verify tunnel and other project work conditions
based on geological testing information, surface and underground
mapping.
- Maintain registers of excavation progress and generate
periodical tunnel and other project works progress reports,
including references to geological, stability and safety regulation
compliance terms. Include any comments and recommendations
pertaining to the underground and surface excavations.
- Inspect and report any type of section stability such as roads,
soil and tock excavations, construction base stability and material
compliance according to the project development.
- Coordinate with the contractor's staff and assure that the
required information is delivered in an efficient and timely manner
and in the way PHC requires it.
- Participate in meetings in order to check security, quality and
work progress, informing and assisting to define when a methodology
change is needed.
Knowledge and Experience (including qualifications):
Tertiary qualification in a technical Geological Geotechnical
discipline.
A proven track record and in depth experience in the
construction and management of large scale infrastructure and
tunnel projects either in the mining or hydroelectric power sector.
15 - 20 years experience in construction of such projects.
Knowledge and computer fluency in standard software packages
such as Excel, Word, Project, etc.
