Professional Development

Pacific Hydro offers professional development through personal and team training and ongoing education for all employees. This is an area we focus on as part of our development and retentions strategy and includes internal knowledge training through initiatives such as lunchtime information sessions and training courses.  External professional development is also encouraged and tracked for our employees through a range of methods.  We pride ourselves on having a "healthy" training budget and offering employees opportunities to move into different areas of our business through our internal recruitment methods and our performance appraisal system.

Employee Opinion Survey

We value the thoughts and feedback of our people and are always keen to evolve and improve in areas of our business where we may not be performing as well as we should.  Employee feedback helps the company understand what areas it needs to improve and is also used as a benchmark for us to compare ourselves against each year.

The Employee Opinion Survey [and OAS] is a confidential and anonymous survey held annually, designed to give all our employees the opportunity to state their opinion on what is important to them in the workplace and how well they think Pacific Hydro is performing in relation to those criteria.

Our response rate globally for 2008 was an impressive 90% proving our employees support the process and believe that their say makes a difference.  The global performance score across best practice categories were within the top quartile.  This reflects an organisation that, across the categories of leadership, strategy, information, processing and business performance, is in the top 25% compared to other organisations in the survey providers benchmark database. Overall satisfaction was also measured in the top 25%.

Year on year initiatives are approved for implementation in the specific areas, highlighted by the survey results globally and locally, in order to maintain or increase satisfaction.

Sustainability and Community at Work

Pacific Hydro is committed to building a global business which powers a cleaner world, creates positive outcomes for our host communities, protects and improves the environment and respects and develops our people, while at the same time creating value for our shareholder. Pacific Hydro is committed to building a sustainable business.

Relationships with Communities

Forging sustainable relationships with our host communities is fundamental to Pacific Hydro's long term success and viability.

In the 2008 financial year, Pacific Hydro provided A$370,000 to the communities in which we operate under the company's land mark Sustainable Communities Fund and through other community initiatives.
We have conducted numerous community consultations through the development and planning phases of projects to ensure that our host communities have a say in shaping our projects and are fully informed of plans and progress.

Our community sponsorships and partnerships also demonstrate our commitment to becoming a contributing member of our host communities.

Health & Safety

A key value of Pacific Hydro is to have a workplace that is free of injury and harm to people, and we have dedicated significant resources to ensuring the health and safety of our staff, contractors and other stakeholders.
Year on year we set challenging targets in the area of health and safety management and we are pleased to report that we met all of our health and safety targets in the 2008 financial year.
