Pacific Hydro’s Vincent North Wind Farm is located between Port Julia and Port Vincent on the Yorke Peninsula.
After an extensive period of investigation and consultation, the site was selected for its consistently strong winds, proximity to the National Electricity Grid, current compatible land use, land size and geology, and ease of access for construction and maintenance vehicles.
The project was given preliminary planning approval by Yorke Peninsula District Council in mid-2003, and subsequently obtained firm planning approval in December 2003. The wind farm will comprise of up to 36 generators each with a nominal rating of 1.65MW, giving an indicative plant capacity of 59.4MW. Further studies are being undertaken to determine the overall feasibility of the project.
Delivering the benefits
The Vincent North wind farm will avoid the emission of 145,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year and generate enough clean electricity for up to 24,000 homes every year.
It will also provide a significant boost to the local economy through construction, operation and maintenance. Tourism in the region is likely to increase as a result, and since the wind farm will occupy only 1 per cent of the site, current farming activities will be able to continue unaffected.
