Treading lightly on the earth

As part of our sustainable, triple bottom line business approach, we ensure that the development, construction and operation of our projects leave only a positive footprint on the environment.

The energy used to run our business - including manufacturing raw materials, shipping and transport, construction, and even food and clothing - is a fraction of the green power generated each year at our wind farms and hydro plants.

We aim to lead in environmental management and will continually strive to set an example of best practice based on our sustainable development principles.

For our Australian operating sites we developed and implemented an ISO 14001 accredited Environmental Management System (EMS). Our commitment to the EMS begins at the top management level, has the full support of all our people and includes efforts to decrease electricity and paper use in our work places.

In 2005, we formulated an Environmental Policy to carefully protect our sites and ensure that all our projects are constructed and managed in an environmentally sensitive manner. To read the policy in full, click here.

A watershed development

Tree planting at Bakun

Our commitment to the environment extends to our watershed management programs, which enhance the local environments and protect the native flora and fauna around our hydro projects. The program at our Bakun Hydro Scheme in the Philippines has been particularly successful in protecting and maintaining existing forest cover, encouraging significant reforestation and rehabilitating slopes damaged from previous agricultural practices.
