When it comes to greenhouse gas pollution Australians really do punch well above their weight. We are the world’s biggest contributors to climate change on a per capita basis, generating 27,000 kilograms of global warming pollution each year for every man, woman and child in the country.
As the impacts of climate change become all too clear, the time to act to reduce our greenhouse emissions is here.
We all have the power to reduce our individual contribution to global warming.
Just some of the ways we can participate in reducing climate change include:
- Use less energy - We can cut energy use in the home by as much as 30% through simple actions like unplugging appliances when not in use, installing energy efficient appliances and lighting and insulating your home to reduce the need to run heaters and air conditioners.
- Switch to green energy - Contact your energy retailer and ask to have your home powered by clean energy sources such as wind, water and solar energy.
- Get involved - You can make a difference beyond your home by calling on governments at all levels to take stronger action on climate change. Writing letters, petitions and organising public gatherings are just some of the ways you can increase community awareness of global warming and bring pressure on governments to introduce measures to reduce greenhouse gas pollution.
